eLearning Tutorials – Licenced to Share!

Did you know all our eLearning Tutorials were licenced CC-BY? This means that you can take and use, adapt, modify our tutorial documents for any purpose!   So, if you want to take our materials and use or adapt them for your own situation, please feel free! The only thing we ask is that, in addition to attributing us as the original authors, if you make improvements, please send them back to us so we can share those improvements with everyone.

And while I have you here, here are the six Creative Commons (CC) licenses that can be created from the four CC licence elements – note that all six licenses require attribution.

CC BY image  “CC BY” allows people to use the work for any purpose.

CC BY SA image   “BY-SA” allows people to use the work for any purpose, but adaptations must be made available under the same or a compatible license.

CC BY NC image “BY-NC” allows people to use the work for any noncommercial purpose (so, they can’t make a profit from the work or adaptations of it).

CC BY NC SA image  “BY-NC-SA” allows people to use the work for noncommercial purposes, but must be made available under the same or a compatible license.

CC BY ND image  “BY-ND” allows people to use the work for any purpose (even commercially) but NOT to adapt it.

CC BY NC ND image  “BY-NC-ND” allows people to use only the un-adapted work for noncommercial purposes.

Newly highlighted teaching resources and tips

Library resource highlights

  • AskAway online chat: Camosun Librarians have significantly increased the amount of time they spend monitoring this virtual reference service. If you follow the links on Camosun Library pages, chances are greater that you will connect directly with a Camosun Librarian. Not just or students, faculty can use this service too!
  • Google Scholar: Can be accessed via the library’s Databases A-Z . It will connect you with full text content from Camosun research databases as well as free coronavirus-related content from Elsevier, the Lancet, JAMA, Wiley, and many more!

Basic glossary for online teaching

  • Synchronous = “at the same time”. Teachers and students meet online in real time through videoconferencing or live chatting. USE SPARINGLY during previously scheduled class times, or one-on-one office hours, or as an optional chance to connect.
  • Asynchronous = “not at the same time”. Teachers create learning experiences for students to work at their own pace and take time to absorb content.
  • Blackboard Collaborate = Camosun’s web conferencing tool for synchronous learning (similar to Zoom, except Zoom does NOT meet privacy requirements as it is hosted in the USA. ) Contact eLearning for training.
  • Microsoft Teams = another Camosun-supported web conferencing tool. GREAT for staff meetings, but not available for students.
  • Kaltura = Camosun’s tool for recording, storing and distributing video through D2L (similar to You Tube). Contact eLearning for training.

Principles

  1. Nobody signed up for this.
  • Not for the sickness, not for the social distancing, not for the sudden end of our collective lives together on campus
  • Not for an online class, not for teaching remotely, not for learning from home, not for mastering new technologies, not for varied access to learning materials
  1. The humane option is the best option.
  • We are going to prioritize supporting each other as humans
  • We are going to prioritize simple solutions that make sense for the most
  • We are going to prioritize sharing resources and communicating clearly
  1. We cannot just do the same thing online.
  • Some assignments are no longer possible
  • Some expectations are no longer reasonable
  • Some objectives are no longer valuable
  1. We will foster intellectual nourishment, social connection, and personal accommodation.
  • Accessible asynchronous content for diverse access, time zones, and contexts
  • Optional synchronous discussion to learn together and combat isolation
  1. We will remain flexible and adjust to the situation.
  • Nobody knows where this is going and what we’ll need to adapt
  • Everybody needs support and understanding in this unprecedented moment

I thought I would share some of the new CETL bulletin we are sending out to our Camosun faculty every Friday.  These tips might be useful to you, and if you have your own to share back, please add them in the Comments!

Best Practices for recording Blackboard Collaborate sessions:

  • Tutorial for recording a session
  • Tell students up front that the session will be recorded and why.
  • Be clear about why you are recording (e.g. so that students who can’t attend or have technical issues during, can review later).
  • Tell students that the recordings are stored on a Canadian-based server.
  • Advise students up front that they should not share the recording with anyone not in the class.
  • Give students the option of participating through audio/microphones or just via the chat room, etc.
  • Finally – instructors need to know where the recordings are and tell their students how to access them.

Hello everyone out there.  Most of you (all of you?) are now in the thick of the mad rush to move online in the world that is COVID Crisis.

I am going to try and post something every day to support any way I can in the next few weeks.

I know many of you are creating amazing resources to support your faculty and students in this frantic chaotic rush to online learning, and I wanted today to share one of the resource sites we have set up here at Camosun.  This is our eLearning Guidance for Remote Instruction.

On this site, you will find some things to think about (and we recommend taking a moment to breathe and calm your mind first).  You will also find links to our many tutorials for Collaborate, Kaltura, and D2L – all are CC-BY licenced so you can take and adapt as you like.

I’ll leave you with this for now, and return tomorrow with some more great resources for you.  And now, enjoy some entertainment to help you get through the rest of your day:

 

Reminders for Winter – Where to get Help

As we gear up for the new school year, I wanted to remind you of some important information related to D2L, both for faculty and students.

Wondering where to get help?  We have offices at Lansdowne in the Library (LLC158) and at Interurban in the Campus Centre (LACC236) .  Check out our website for information on drop-ins at interurban.

Reminder of where to get help to get ready for January

Looking for help with setting up your final grades, etc.? Getting ready to set up your courses for the Winter term? eLearning is here to help.

We have drop-in times at Interurban in LACC251J on Fridays from 11:30am-12:30pm and in December, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00am-12:00pm.  And don’t forget, you can also schedule one-on -one consults with an instructional designer at either campus.

eLearning Workshops, Drop-ins, Booking Appointments, and Support Reminders

We wanted to remind you that if you need any help setting up your D2L course sites, or have any questions now or during the term about D2L or how to use (or why you might want to use) any of its functions, or about the other tools we support, such as Kaltura and Blackboard Collaborate Ultra (BBCU), we are here for you!

Our eLearning Support team is available for faculty and students from 8:30-4:30, Monday-Friday by phone (250-370-3488) or by email (desupport@camosun.ca) or even by in-person in the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) offices in the Lansdowne Library.

We also have 5 instructional designers who are available to help you by appointment at both campuses, or during our eLearning drop-ins at Interurban. These drop-ins, in our CETL offices in the Liz Ashton Campus Centre, room 251J, are:

September

  • Tuesdays, September 3, 10, 17, 24, from 11:00-12:00pm
  • Thursdays, September 5, 12, 19, 26, from 11:00-12:00pm

Setting up Your Gradebook

Date & Time: Friday, September 13 from 10-11:30am
Location: LACC 251J, Interurban Campus
Description: This hands on workshop will focus on setting up your Gradebook from start to finish. Please bring your course outline (or a breakdown of your assessment items) if you wish to build your own Gradebook during the workshop.

Managing Groups in D2L

Date & Time: Friday, September 20 from 10-11:30am
Location: LACC 251J, Interurban Campus
Description: This workshop will provide an overview of how to create and manage groups in D2L. A demonstration of how to create private group discussions and group assignment folders will be provided.

Building Quizzes in D2L

Date & Time: Friday, September 27 from 10-11:30am
Location: LACC 251J, Interurban Campus
Description: This workshop will explore ways to create, customize and grade quizzes. We’ll also tackle creating Question Pools and how to organize your questions in the Question Library.

Managing Assignments

Date & Time: Friday, October 4 from 10-11:30am
Location: LACC 251J, Interurban Campus
Description: The Assignment tool in D2L enables students to submit assignments while streamlining the grading process for instructors. This workshop provides hands-on practice creating, managing and grading assignments.

Getting Started with Kaltura (Streaming Media Service)

Date & Time: Friday, October 11 from 10-11:30am
Location: LACC 251J, Interurban Campus
Description: Kaltura is Camosun College’s streaming media service that integrates into D2L. This means faculty and students now have a place to create, edit, and house their course-related videos. Kaltura also integrates with D2L.Come find out more about what Kaltura is, what it can do, and how you can use it for your courses. Bring a laptop to the session if you have one.

Connecting with Your Students in Real-time

Date & Time: Friday, October 25 from 10-11:30am
Location: LACC 251J, Interurban Campus
Description: Blackboard Collaborate Ultra is Camosun’s web conferencing tool. Whether you teach face-to-face, blended, or online, this tool can help you increase instructor-student and student-to-student engagement. Come find out more about how you can connect with learners synchronously. This session requires you bring a laptop to participate.

Managing Final Grades in D2L

Date & Time: Friday, December 13, 10-11:30
Location: LACC 251J, Interurban Campus
Description: It’s grading time again! This workshop is designed to provide a quick refresher on how to input and manage grades in D2L. An overview of how to apply grade schemes and release calculated and adjusted final grades will also be provided.
